Ph.D. studentships
The Claude Shannon Institute is now accepting applications for Ph.D. studentships in any of the following areas:
- Coding theory
- Cryptography
- Discrete Mathematics
- Algebra
- Algebraic Geometry
- Number Theory
- Public Key Cryptography/Computational Algebra

will be a rolling deadline until positions are filled.
Ph.D. Studentship Stipend: 20,000 Euro per annum . In addition, we will pay fees and award a generous travel budget for conferences, workshops, etc.
Starting Date: September 2008
To apply for a studentship send a
CV with letter of interest to Gary McGuire as soon as possible. In that letter please indicate your preference of PhD supervisor. Also, please include contact details of two references, and have your transcripts of exam results available at short notice.
The student should also formally apply to the PhD programme in the School or Department of his or her supervisor, stating there that he or she has applied for or has been offered a Claude Shannon Institute PhD studentship. A successful candidate will form an integral part of one of the research projects of the Institute.

The Programme:
The Claude
Shannon Institute contributes to a three to four year Ph.D. programme with a broad education to equip graduates for work in academia and industry.
- Basic courses in mathematical communications theory in the first year for all students. (The modules are: Finite Fields, Coding Theory, Cryptography, Information Theory, Algorithms and Programming, Signal Processing).
- Interdisciplinary research.
- Workshops and collaboration with industry.
- Short courses in advanced topics in later years.
- Transferable skills training.

A holder of
a Claude Shannon Institute studentship will be expected to fully participate in all activities of the Shannon Institute, including workshops, seminars and short courses.
