Leading international researcher Prof. Nigel Boston to join CSI

Leading international researcher Professor Nigel Boston will join the
Claude Shannon Institute, the UCD Complex and Adaptive Systems
Laboratory (CASL) and UCD School of Mathematical Sciences under the SFI
Stokes Programme.

In September 2008 the Claude Shannon Institute, UCD CASL and the UCD School of Mathematical Sciences will welcome Professor Boston as a member of their research team. Professor Boston was previously located at the University of Wisconsin where he held joint appointments in Mathematics and in Electrical and Computer Engineering. While at the University of Wisconsin, Professor Boston worked in the areas of pure algebra and number theory, related to the famous proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, and he also collaborated with engineers and computer scientists on novel applications of algebra in areas such as automated face recognition and sensor networks.

Professor Boston said "I will continue this work at UCD by building an
international program in number theory and pursuing interdisciplinary
collaborations through the Claude Shannon Institute and CASL."
Professor Boston's work at UCD will focus, in part, on problems in
surveillance with camera sensors, quasirandom sensor placement and security of sensor networks and will further develop the UCD CASL SenseTile System, an SFI funded multidisciplinary project which brings together computer scientists, electrical engineers, geophysical scientists and mathematicians to solve problems in determining, transmitting and protecting information in sensor networks. In addition,
the appointment of Professor Boston, as the Stokes Professor of Pure
and Applied Algebra, will strengthen the number theory group in the
School of Mathematical Sciences at UCD.

The Science Foundation Ireland Stokes Professorship and Lectureship
Programme ("The Stokes") is designed to support the strategic
recruitment of research-active faculty members. Established in 2007, the
Stokes provides Higher Education Institutes with greater flexibility in
the strategic recruitment of key research personnel at multiple levels,
thereby enabling Schools and Institutes to integrate quality research
staff to the existing pool of expertise.

From the 2007 call, SFI will fund a total of 15 Stokes Professorships
and 40 Stokes Lectureships. SFI will provide awards of €90,000
(Lectureships) and €180,000 (Professorships) per annum for the duration
of the award. With 9 Stokes Professorships and 7 Stokes Lectureships,
UCD was the most successful institution in the SFI Stokes Programme
awards announced by the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment,
Mr Micheál Martin TD.
